I’m fascinated by geometry and pure forms, like cones, spheres, and cubes. But I also love nature. The concept for this light came by observing owls. They’re amazing because they can stand still and move their neck 270 degrees. I wanted to create a light that was capable of doing the same…of spreading its light around just by rotating one of its components.
There is a mechanism in the light between the base and the “head” that allows it to rotate. The base stays still, while the head rotates completely, 360 degrees. It allows you to point the light straight up, or in any direction around the circumference of the light. When you point it straight up, it creates a soft, ambient light. But you can also point it at a book, or even have it illuminate a picture on your wall.
I want my designs to be functional and understandable. I don’t like products that are too abstract or artistic. I really want my products to solve a problem — to answer a real need — and to have a minimalist style.
I wanted a multi-purpose lamp capable of casting light in many different directions. But I wanted to do it without any cords, strings, or distracting parts. I wanted it to be as simple as possible, to be made up of solid shapes. Whatever angle you view it from, the edges are simple and clean.
I really like to design and wear sneakers that are made of leather. I’m a fan of high-top sneakers and heavy leathers. My favorite shoes are these high-top sneakers by Diemme, a brand that makes shoes by hand in a small town in northeast Italy. They’re very minimal, and the upper is made with just one piece of leather. There are no laces, just a zipper.
In terms of furniture and product design, I appreciate Nendo, the Castiglioni brothers, and Dieter Rams. But the designers I really admire are those who improve the lives of disadvantaged people…designers like Stephen Davies who create prosthetic arms for children or the Little Sun project, which brings sustainable energy to areas without electricity. I really appreciate the designers who solve real problems and improve other people’s lives.
